What does One Girl One Novel do?

I wrote a novel called Sometimes That Happens With Chicken and when I took a good hard look at the publishing industry, I decided to cut out all the middle men and start my own publishing company. In the tradition of indie musicians and indie film makers, I’m taking advantage of available technology and bringing my novel directly to readers.

In the past, if you wrote a novel, you needed a publisher (preferably a big one) for printing, distribution, and publicity—but the established publishing industry has outlived its usefulness in all three arenas. Now, I can do everything Random House does—at home, in my spare time, with my laptop and an internet connection. With the advances in personal computing technology and print-on-demand printing there isn’t a single thing Random House does that I can’t do myself.

From printing and distribution to design and publicity, I’m a one woman publishing company. With that in mind a launched a website called One Girl One Novel, and from that platform I recently launched my debut novel.

How are they different?

My product is not new and my business model is not new but the successful marriage of literary fiction and indie business is new and I am determined to succeed. I’m setting myself apart by bringing a level of quality and professionalism to both that people haven’t seen before.

As a self-published book, the quality of the writing, editing, and design are what set my product apart.
As a literary novel, Sometimes That Happens With Chicken is unique both in style and in content. According to one of my fans, “It blazes beyond what we have come to expect from modern fiction.”

It’s still too early to call this marriage a success, but the early signs are spectacular. There’s a page on my site where readers can post reviews. Since One Girl One Novel launched in February, I have been compared to Hemingway, Hitchcock, Salinger, and Burroughs. Not many novelist can say that, no matter how their book got published.

Why could One Girl One Novel be BIG?

Most writers only give people one story to talk about, but I’m giving people two stories to talk about. The story in my novel doesn’t have to carry the entire weight of my publicity efforts and my business model provides a story of interest that reaches far beyond the literary audience. The readers can tell their bookish friends about a great book but people who don’t even read can tell their friends about this girl who is taking her book indie and doing everything herself. We’ve seen every other kind of indie success story, we’re overdue for a literary one.

How they plan to make money:

Like any publisher, my plan is to sell books. But at this stage, I’m doing more than producing books. I’m also building a brand. I’m providing an opportunity for people to participate in indie literature while building an audience for all my novels, the second and third of which are already in the pipeline.

Our thoughts:

Incredibly honest description – and think the pitch is quite compelling!
